Astronomical Training Programme 2020-2021

Four of the STEM Club members who studied Physics were nominated to the “Astronomical Training Programme for Secondary Students 2020-2021” and have completed it. The programme was co-organized by the Hong Kong Space Museum, the Department of Physics of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Astronomical Society. The four students passed both the written and practical examinations with  Omar HUI (6M) obtaining the Excellence Award, whereas Heidia CHAN (6M), Samuel CHUANG (6Y) and Ethan LAU (5Y) obtained the Certificate of Achievement. They have been awarded a diploma and two credits from the Faculty of Science for Young Talents of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

In terms of theoretical courses, the students attended a course operated by the Department of Physics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The students learned basic astronomical knowledge such as the origin of modern astronomy, celestial movement and the calendar, as well as University-level astronomy theories, such as black holes, relativity and cosmology.

In terms of practice, the students went to the Hong Kong Space Museum to participate in workshops and observation activities hosted by local astronomy educators. The Hong Kong Space Museum guided the students through the starry sky with a star projection system in the Space Theatre, while the Hong Kong Astronomical Society taught basic visual observation skills and discussed the characteristics and usage of different astronomical telescopes, binoculars and star maps.

Students gained eye-opening experience through the programme. Please join us in congratulating them.
